This study investigates the potential for aligning Dutch international policies with Kenya's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on fostering positive interactions between SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). By incorporating agro-ecological principles, the research explores how such alignment can promote sustainable agricultural practices and biodiversity conservation in Kenya.
Utilizing qualitative desk research methods, including policy analysis and interviews, the study examines existing policies related to these SDGs and the extent to which agro-ecological principles are already applied. The findings suggest that the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs could benefit from aligning its policies more closely with Kenya's Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) strategy, which takes a more comprehensive approach to environmental issues by integrating biodiversity conservation.
While agro-ecological principles are somewhat present in both Dutch and Kenyan policies, broader integration could further support biodiversity in policy frameworks. Locally, agro-ecological practices could help farmers maintain or improve soil health, integrate indigenous knowledge, and adopt more sustainable agricultural methods.
However, challenges exist, including unclear definitions of agro-ecology, feasibility concerns, increased labor demands, and a limited focus on economic benefits. The study concludes that Dutch policy should prioritize biodiversity conservation and consider the integration of agro-ecological principles. It also recommends increasing the use of these principles and practices locally to promote sustainable agriculture in Kenya.
