Introduction:
Human activities such as deforestation, urbanization, and pollution significantly impact wildlife populations, leading to habitat destruction, fragmentation, and contamination. This proposal focuses on the edge effects at the boundaries between different habitats in Kajiado County, Kenya, and aims to understand and mitigate these impacts.
Background:
Deforestation and urbanization destroy natural habitats, forcing wildlife to compete for limited resources or relocate, leading to population declines. Pollution from industrial and agricultural activities further harms wildlife by contaminating food and water sources. The impacts are compounded by climate change, making the survival of wildlife even more challenging.
Objectives:
- Identify factors contributing to edge effects, including human activities and habitat characteristics.
- Understand the impact of habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change on wildlife distribution and abundance.
- Develop and evaluate conservation strategies to mitigate the negative effects of human activities on wildlife.
Materials and Methods:
The study will be conducted in two sites in Kajiado County: Maasai Mara National Reserve and a nearby ranch. Four transects of 50x500m will be sampled along the edges, with species abundance assessed in 5 plots of 50x100m within each transect. The distribution of species and avian communities will be observed relative to distances from the edge.
Proposed Solutions:
- Implement policies protecting forests and natural habitats.
- Invest in renewable energy to reduce pollution.
- Enhance public awareness and education on the impacts of human activities on wildlife.
Conclusion:
Human activities have profound impacts on wildlife, and it is crucial to take action to protect these species through sustainable practices, reducing pollution, and promoting conservation efforts.
