Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Khat, a leafy stimulant, plays a pivotal role in the economies of Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Somaliland, and Djibouti. This cash crop, known as "Miraa" in Kenya, is a significant export commodity, with the majority of its supply reaching Somalia. Each day, about 50 tons of Kenyan khat, valued at over $400,000, find their way to Somalia, making up 90% of Kenya's khat exports. Ethiopia is also a major player, exporting substantial quantities to Somaliland and Djibouti.

Despite its economic benefits, khat trade is not without controversy. The trade is deeply embedded in the social and political fabric of the region, affecting everything from tax revenues to labor markets. In Somaliland, khat accounts for 30% of domestic revenue, while in Djibouti, it contributes significantly to the national tax income. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted this trade, leading to significant economic losses for farmers and traders.

Key Highlights:

  • Kenya-Somalia Trade: Over 50 tons of khat are delivered daily, generating $400,000 per day.
  • Ethiopia-Somaliland and Djibouti: Ethiopia is the main supplier, with 16.5 tons arriving in Djibouti daily.
  • Economic Impact: Khat trade is a major revenue source, contributing millions to national economies.
  • Social and Political Effects: Khat consumption impacts labor markets and political relationships.
